American Legion Scholarship  (Blanche V. Mastrovich Memorial Scholarship) $2,500 5/15/2019 This $2,500 award will be given to a senior girl who exemplifies the character and values of Blanche Mastrovich, a lifelong Whitehall resident, WHS graduate and longtime Whitehall School bookkeeper. Senior girls who wish to be considered for this award can submit a detailed resume of activities and an essay on a specific topic to the guidance office before the deadline. American Legion Scholarship  (Joseph & Daniel Mastrovich Memorial Scholarship) $2,500 - $5,000 5/15/2019  The American Legion awards a scholarship in memory of Joseph and Daniel Mastrovich.  In order to be eligible for the scholarship seniors must have an 85 or higher GPA and must have been accepted into an accredited university or college prior to May 1st.  Seniors can apply for this scholarship by submitting a detailed resume of activities and an essay on a specific topic to the guidance office before the deadline.  Details will be available in the guidance office.    Yes

Best Mattress Reviews Scholarship $1,000 5/15/2019 Best Mattress Reviews is asking applicants to create a short video about the importance of sleep. Applicants must submit a short survey about sleep patterns.  Link No

Com Scholarship $1,000 TBA  The SeniorHomes.com Caregiver Scholarship is intended for students who are passionate about helping seniors live healthy lives and are pursuing careers in senior care. Washington County Fair Scholarship $500 8/1/2019 The Washington County Fair, Inc. annual scholarships are available to all individuals who are currently or previously have been, active in the Washington County Fair without discrimination as to race, color, creed, gender or disability, and are currently attending or plan to attend an accredited institution of higher learning. Capital Auto Auction STEM Scholarship $250 - $1,000 8/15/2019 Capital Auto Auction is awarding this scholarship to support students pursuing STEM-related degrees. To qualify, undergraduate students must be majoring in a STEM field of study (or related field) as well as attending an accredited college or university.  Link No
Horatio Alger State Scholarship $10,000 10/25/2019 The program specifically assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. The scholarships are funded by Horatio Alger Members who, like the Scholars, have experienced challenges but ultimately overcame them to become successful business and civic leaders. Link No
The James Henry Byrne Scholarship $250 5/29/2019 NY senior going on to post secondary education, entering the military, attending a technical college or entering a profession that requires tools or supplies can apply for this scholarship.  An essay of 300 words or less is required, the topic is "What did your years at Whitehall High School mean to you?  What are your plans for your immediate future and why?" Lt. Donald J. Nassivera Memorial Scholarship $500 TBA $500 scholarship awarded to students interested in the criminal justice field, or any student that has been a positive influence in the community.  Applications WILL BE  available in the guidance office and a 200 word essay is required.     TBA

Dorothy M. Smith Memorial Scholarship $550 TBA This scholarship guaranteed to go to one of our seniors!  Seniors planning to attend a FOUR year college or university next year, who have an 80 or above average, usually an essay of no more than 500 words is required.  The essay should include the name of the college you plan to attend and the reasons why you value the opportunity to obtain a four year degree.  Look for details to be announced in the spring.   TBA
Distinguished Young Women of New York Varies Varies Distinguished Young Women is the oldest and largest scholarship program for high school girls. Scholarships are available in two ways: cash tuition scholarships (which can be used at any accredited institution of higher learning) and college-granted scholarships (over 100 colleges and universities offer scholarships to program participants). Financial Aid Information

 

 

FAFSA

All students who hope to receive any type of financial aid for college need to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at www.fafsa.ed.gov as soon as possible AFTER October 1st of their senior year.  The FAFSA is used by the federal government and colleges to decide how much money they will award the student in grants and scholarships (you do NOT have to be paid back) and how much would need to be covered by student loans (you DO have to be paid back).

Other Aid/Awards Based on Tax Information

1. The NYS TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) The Tap application follows the FAFSA and is used to decide how much money New York State would contribute to the student's education.

2. NYS Excelsior Scholarship Provides full tuition for full time college students whose parents make less than $110,000 per year combined. Students will need to apply in order to receive this scholarship.  In return they must promise to work in NYS for at least the number of years that they used the scholarship.  Please be aware students and parents need to file the FAFSA and NYS TAP first.  The Excelsior scholarship, as it is designed to be applied to any tuition costs left over after eligibility for Pell Grant, NYS Tap and other options have been exhausted. To complete the application, you will need: Your 2015 IT-201 NYS Income Tax Return(s), Your current unofficial college transcript, Your Student Aid Report (SAR), which you received when you filed your completed FASFA.

In order to apply, students must meet eligibility requirements, including:

Be residents of New York State

Plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY two or four-year degree program

Take 30 credits per year and make progress towards graduation

Maintain good academic standing

 

 

New York State Scholarships

1. NYS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

-Three scholarships are awarded each year, pending NYS budget approval, to seniors at Whitehall who meet certain criteria.  Students do not need to apply for this, the guidance office will automatically apply for them and they will be announced and awarded at Graduation. 

- Scholarships are awarded in the amounts of $1,500 and $500 to the two students whose Regents exam score averages are the highest using the following formula:  English Regents Exam x 3, Algebra 2 and Trigonometry Regents Exam x 3, Global History Regents Exam x 1, US History Regents Exam x 1, Physical Science Regents Exam x 1 and Living Environment Regents Exam x 1. 

2. NYS STEM SCHOLARSHIP

-NY seniors who are in the top 10% of their graduating class, and plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY school to major in Science, Engineering, Technology or Math can qualify for a full tuition scholarship if they promise to work in their chosen field in NYS for at least 5 years after graduation.  Visit www.hesc.ny.org/STEM for details and to apply.

 

   

 

Junior Private College Scholarship Applications

 Whitehall awards a number of Private College scholarships to qualified juniors each spring.  Students are asked to submit a simple resume along with their applications.  Students can see their school counelor with questions or to ask for help.
