The Health Promotion Center at Glens Falls Hospital is pleased to announce the efforts of Whitehall Elementary School to increase wellness among their preschoolers. The goal of this partnership is to further promote health and wellness for the district’s students, faculty, staff, and community. The district benefits from the support of “Creating Healthy Schools and Communities” (CHSC), a New York State Department of Health grant secured by Glens Falls Hospital.
Since partnering with Glens Falls Hospital’s Health Promotion Center, Whitehall Central School District has benefited over the last 6 years, including assistance with their Wellness Policy and Wellness Committee, added physical education units including archery and snowshoeing, and a newly implemented indoor gardening program.
Most recently CHSC supported students at the preschool level. A new area on the playground allows them to run, jump, and wheel safely. CHSC procured a caterpillar to climb upon, a horse to rock on, and a stationary “Merry go Bicycle” that allows students to practice their peddling skills.
The elementary school principal Adriana Strong shared, "The impact of the newly installed playground equipment for our preschool students truly allows for them to have their own special space."
The CHSC initiative strives to increase physical activity and access to healthy foods in our communities and schools, whether this be through school districts, early childcare centers, worksites, or community settings. The Health Promotion Center of Glens Falls Hospital works to improve the health and well-being of the people and communities in our region. Present work focuses on strategies to make it easier for people to eat well, be tobacco-free, be physically active, and obtain preventative care. This work is currently supported through numerous grant-funded initiatives housed within the Health Promotion Center, including Creating Healthy Schools and Communities, Health Systems for a Tobacco-Free NY, and Cancer Prevention in Action programs.
